Says China could wrongfully detain American citizens.
The Department of State announced on Tuesday that travel to mainland China and Hong Kong was no longer safe for Americans. The statement lays out several reasons for the advisory including allegations that China would wrongly hold American citizens under arrest to force them to comply with investigations and pressure their family members to return from overseas.
According to the State Department’s advisory, “The PRC government arbitrarily enforces local laws, including by carrying out arbitrary and wrongful detentions and through the use of exit bans on U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries without due process of law.” The Chinese foreign ministry described the advisory as “unwarranted political manipulation.”
